⏳ Question: There were many ways for Jesus to die; why did He have to hang on a tree (the Cross)? What is the relationship between the serpent Moses lifted in the wilderness and the Cross?
- Fulfillment of Scripture: The prophecies foretold exactly how Jesus would die. According to John 3:14-15, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” Just as those who looked at the bronze serpent lived, those who believe in Christ lifted on the Cross receive eternal life. To fulfill this prophecy, He had to be lifted on a tree.
- Redemption from the Curse: Galatians 3:13-14 states, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.” In order to take the legal curse upon Himself and bring us a blessing, He became a curse for us by hanging on that tree. Only through death on the Cross was our redemption from the curse achieved.
- In the Fullness of Time: God sent His Son “when the fullness of the time had come” (Galatians 4:4). Had He come during the Greek or Babylonian empires, their methods of execution (such as stoning or beheading) would not have allowed Him to hang on a tree.
