✝️ Question: What is the mystery behind Jesus’ fourth word on the Cross, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Why did the Father, who never leaves Him alone, let go of the Son’s hand at that moment?
- Eternal Fellowship: God the Father never truly abandoned the Son. Jesus testified in John 8:29, “The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone.” This intimacy existed from eternity and continued even after His incarnation.
- The Burden of Sin: On the Cross, Jesus gathered all the sins of humanity—from the first sin of Adam and Eve to the very last mistake of the final human—and took them upon Himself. He declared Himself accountable for all our sins.
- Hatred for Sin: God the Father is holy. He cannot put His hand into the bundle of sin that the Son was carrying. Because sin is abominable to God, He had to let go of the Son’s hand at that specific moment.
- To Hold Our Hand: There was a profound purpose behind God letting go of the Son’s hand. By releasing the Son, God gained the “technical authority” to reach out and hold the hands of sinful humanity. If He hadn’t let go of the Son, it would have implied that God was compromising with sin.
